Barbados resort excels in sustainable tourism practices

Almond Beach Village achieves Green Globe 21 environmental certification

St. Peter, Barbados – Almond Beach Village has achieved the prestigious Green Globe 21 Benchmarked Certificate under the new Green Globe 21 Certification program, which recognizes the resort’s commitment to operating at the world’s highest environmental standard.

Almond Beach Village has spent considerable time benchmarking its energy and water consumption, waste production and disposal, as well as implementing an integrated environmental and social policy. In particular it has achieved best practice results in energy consumption, social commitment, and potable water consumption. These measures will deliver ongoing reduction of non-renewable resources, extensive cost savings, and secure a sustainable commercial and ecological future for the business.

Green Globe 21 is the global benchmarking, certification, and improvement system assisting the international travel and tourism industry to attain sustainability. Green Globe 21 provides a certification system that responds directly to the major environmental problems facing the planet, including the greenhouse effect, overuse of freshwater resources, destruction of biodiversity, production of solid and biological waste, and social issues.

The 346-room Almond Beach Village, an all-inclusive resort in Barbados, boasts 10 pools and a mile-long beach that offers guests laid-back luxury. With an environmental and purchasing policy that guides the operation, major achievements to date include reduction in electricity use and water consumption. The resort has also significantly reduced the amount of non-biodegradable chemicals they use, substituting them with biodegradable chemicals.

Almond Resorts Inc. also supports a number of local businesses and community organizations as part of their outreach programme. Initiatives have included providing space for local craftspeople to display and sell their merchandise; purchasing foods from local farmers and fishermen and incorporating local foods into the resort’s menu; participating in the Adopt-your-Beach programme – Batts Rock, St. James, Barbados; donating linen to hospitals and some geriatric homes; and supporting environmental clubs at local community schools.

“I am delighted that Almond Beach Village has achieved Benchmarked status,” says Cathy Parsons, global manager of Green Globe 21. “Almond Beach Village is an inspiration to all those people committed to environmentally sustainable tourism. They have demonstrated through a variety of initiatives that the business and its employees can make a difference to reducing their environmental impact. The commitment they have shown in signing up to participate in the Green Globe 21 program and their achievements set an example for other businesses to follow.”
