Montserrat summer cultural festival debuts in July 2006
Calabash Festival combines Montserratian art, music and food
Montserrat’s first Calabash Festival is set to debut July 21-24, 2006. Organized by the Montserrat Hospitality Association to contribute to the revival of the island, the festival aims to unite communities and share Montserratian culture with visitors.
The festival is named after the calabash tree, long identified with Montserratian culture. For centuries the tree’s fruit, after being cleaned out, has been used for many purposes, including serving dishes, storage containers, musical instruments and lanterns.
The new festival combines art, music and food with a number of festivities, which include an opening ceremony and exhibition at the Montserrat National Trust, a Cultural Explosion at Festival Village, a fun run and food fair, a beach splash and barbeque, and an island bus tour and forest hike.
