Dominica announces performers for the 10th Annual World Creole Music Festival

Lineup includes Grammy-Award winners Shaggy and Wyclef Jean for the October 2006 event

Roseau, Dominica (September 5, 2006) – The Caribbean island of Dominica today announced a spectacular lineup of renowned musical acts for the 10th Annual World Creole Music Festival set for October 27-29, 2006 at Pottersville Savannah, Roseau.

Performances on Friday, October 27 include popular Jamaican-born dancehall artist Shaggy who won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1995, and Dominica’s own WCK, the original creators of bouyon music. Other performances include T-Vice from Haiti, Royalty Band from the US and Zouk Flam from Guadeloupe.

On Saturday, October 28 another Grammy-Award winning artist plays for the enthusiastic crowd: Haitian-born sensation Wyclef Jean, formerly with The Fugees and currently a multi-platinum solo artist. Joining him are Triple Kay from Dominica, performers of zouk, compas, reggae, cadance, dancehall and local bouyon music, and Swinging Stars, also from Dominica, featuring Hunter and King Dice. The sounds of Sakis and Djakout complete the evening’s lineup.

Dominica’s Impromptu Band performs on Sunday, October 29 along with “The Dragon” Byron Lee of Jamaica, Admiral T of Guadeloupe, as well as Tabou Combo and Carimi, both from Haiti.

The World Creole Music Festival is now in its tenth year and is one of the region’s premier music festivals, attracting thousands of visitors to Dominica.

Known as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean” and located between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Eastern Caribbean, the independent nation of Dominica (pronounced “Dom-in-eek-a”) is the largest and most mountainous of the Windward Islands, encompassing an area of nearly 290 square miles. Of volcanic origins with mountains reaching heights of nearly 5000 feet, rainforests that are considered among the last true oceanic rainforests in the world, more than 365 rivers, waterfalls, boiling lakes and pristine coral reefs, Dominica’s natural diversity is truly unique. Dominica is also home to the last remaining settlement of the Indigenous Peoples of the Caribbean – the Carib Indians.

A place where man and nature live in harmony, adventurers and nature lovers alike will revel in the island’s ecotourism options, which include scuba diving, snorkelling, mountain biking, kayaking, horseback riding, nature tours, hiking/trekking, sailing, fishing and whale, dolphin and birdwatching.

Dominica continues to be recognized for its attributes and sustainable tourism efforts, including being the first country in the world to receive Benchmarking designation from the prestigious ecotourism organization Green Globe 21 and ranking as the only Caribbean destination in the top five happiest countries on earth in the Happy Planet Index (compiled by Britain’s New Economics Foundation).
