Calendar of events for Nassau and Paradise Island, The Bahamas

January-June 2007 (includes events in Andros, Cat Island, Eleuthera and Exuma, as well as public holidays)

WHAT-TO-DO – NASSAU, CABLE BEACH & PARADISE ISLAND - JAN 2007 EDITION

JANUARY
1 – New Year’s Day. Public holiday.

1 – Polar Bear Swim, venue TBA. Swim in the ocean with giant ice cubes. Beach party with food, drinks and free T-shirt. Organized by the Canadian Men’s Club.

1 – Staniel Cay Cruising Regatta and New Year’s celebration, Exuma. Traditional festivities including a sailing regatta, charity auction and floating drive (golf). Tel (242) 355-2024, David Hocher.

3-4 – Farmer’s Cay Festival, Exuma. Two days of music, food and fun. Tel (242) 355-4006 or 355-4017, Terry Bain.

13 – Opening of the Supreme Court, Christ Church Cathedral, King and George sts, 10am. Church service attended by members of the judiciary dressed in traditional wigs and gowns. Following the service, members proceed from the church to the Supreme Court at Rawson Sq. The Royal Bahamas Police Force Band performs.

26 – Cacique Awards, Rainforest Theatre, Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino. Gala event honours those who contribute strongly to The Bahamas’ tourism industry. Categories include creative arts, sports and leisure, nature tourism, human resource development and transportation. Visit www.caciqueawards.com.

27 – Red Cross Ball, Crystal Ballroom, Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino. Cocktails 7:30pm, dinner served at 8:30pm. Tickets $225. Tel 323-7370 (to 3), Marina Glinton.

27-Feb 3 – Stepping Stone Quilters Annual Quilt Show, Trinity Methodist Church, Frederick St, 10am-4pm.

27-29 – Tenth annual Bahamian Invitational Abaco Arts Festival, Abaco Beach Resort & Boat Harbour, Abaco. Fine art, sculpture, crafts and photography from The Bahamas’ premier artists. Tel (242) 367-2159, Kevie Thomas.

FEBRUARY
TBA – National Arts Festival. Tel 356-2691/2.

TBA – Ebony Fashion Fair, Rainforest Theatre, Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino. Showcase of the latest fashions by American and European designers. Event sponsored by the Pilot Club of Nassau.

9-13 – Miami to Nassau Race Week, Montagu Bay. Hosted by the Nassau Yacht Club and the Miami Yacht Club. Tel 393-5132 or 393-8184.

10-11 – Valentine’s Day Sailing Regatta, Montagu Bay. Exciting weekend of championship sailing.

17 – Heart Ball, Atlantis, Paradise Island. Cocktails 7:15pm, dinner served at 8:30pm. Annual event to raise funds for Bahamian children in need of heart surgery. Grand prize raffle and door prizes. Tickets $200. Tel 327-0806.

27-Mar 7 – George Town Cruising Regatta, Exuma. Enjoy nine days of sailing activities, sports and more. Activities include a conch (pronounced konk) blowing contest, variety show, softball competition and other family fun. Tel (242) 336-2430, Exuma Tourist Office.

MARCH
TBA – Spring Break. Month-long series of beach parties, music, games and other entertainment for college spring breakers, organized by the Ministry of Tourism. Tel 302-2000.

3 – Red Cross Fair, Government House grounds, 12 noon-11pm. Adults $2, children $1. Tel 323-7370 (to 3), Marina Glinton.

15-17 – Bahamian Music and Heritage Festival, Exuma. Bahamian sloop exhibition, storytelling, singing, poetry reading, native arts and crafts and more. Featuring performances by Elon Moxey, Ronnie Butler, Nita, the Rolleville Unite Band and George Whylly and the In-Crowd. Tel (242) 336-2430, Exuma Tourist Office.

17-18 – International Dog Show and Obedience Trials, Botanical Gardens, 9am-2pm. Event showcases local (potcake) and pure-bred dogs of all classes. Tel 393-1360, June Hall.

APRIL
TBA – Island Roots Festival, Garden Theatre, Black Sound, Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. Musical performances by the Royal Bahamian Police Force Band and more.

TBA – Annual Alton Lowe Art Exhibition, Lowe Art Gallery, Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. Paintings by Bahamian artist Alton Lowe and works by American sculptor James Mastin.

6 – Good Friday. Public holiday.

9 – Easter Monday. Public holiday.

22-27 – Bahamas Billfish Championship (Marsh Harbour Tournament), Abaco. Visit www.bahamasbillfish.com.

24-28 – Family Island Regatta, George Town, Exuma. Locally built sloops converge in Elizabeth Harbour for five days of racing for the National Championships. Mailboat and plane excursions available from Nassau. Tel (242) 345-6163, Lionella Thompson or (242) 336-3766, Danny Strachan.

MAY
TBA – Bahamas Film Festival, Galleria Cinemas, JFK Dr. Ten-day festival to showcase films, documentaries, music videos, commercials and public service announcements by Bahamian filmmakers. Awards to be presented to winners of each category.

30-Jun 3 – Eleuthera Pineapple Festival, Gregory Town, Eleuthera. Celebrate the pineapple with a Junkanoo parade, music, food and fun. Tel (242) 332-2142.

JUNE
TBA – All Andros Crabfest, Fresh Creek, Andros. Highlights include the crab cultural show, crab culinary contest and crabs of Andros life-cycle display. Rake ’n scrape music. Tel (242) 368-2286, Andros Tourism Office.

1 – Labour Day. Public holiday.

2-23 – Junkanoo in June Heritage Festival, Arawak Cay, 1-10pm every Sat in June. Enjoy the excitement of Junkanoo with Bahamian food, craft demonstrations, storytelling, children’s activities and grand Junkanoo parade – a spectacle of costume, music and dance.
