Bahamas to get new championship golf course

Ernie Els-designed course to be built by 2008 on New Providence

WHAT-TO-DO – NASSAU, CABLE BEACH & PARADISE ISLAND – JAN 2007 EDITION

Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, two of the best-known names in professional golf, are joining British billionaire Joe Lewis in building a new champion golf course in New Providence.

The Albany course in western New Providence, which probably won’t be ready until sometime in 2008, is being designed by Els, who is making a name for himself as a course builder, with a dozen courses to his credit around the world.

Michael Kenny, president of Els’ design firm, won’t speculate on the opening date, but he did tell What-to-do, “once approvals are in hand, the course can be ready for play in 18 to 24 months, depending on the weather.” Those approvals came through on Nov 10, 2006, with the signing of a heads of agreement between the Tavistock Group and the Bahamian government.

Tavistock Group is a private investment company founded 30 years ago by investor Joe Lewis, who spends a lot of time at his home in Lyford Cay, not far from the Albany property. Both Woods and Els are investors in Tavistock.

“I look forward to spending more time in The Bahamas and playing Ernie on our new golf course,” Woods told the media. Els will have to sharpen up; Woods is at the top of his game heading into 2007, having won six times in a row in 2006, among other accomplishments.
