Experience the best of Belize

Seven-night/eight-day package prices start at US$998 per person for dates in February

Belize (January 10, 2007) – Experience the best of what Belize has to offer with Discovery Expeditions Belize Ltd and their Reef & Rainforest Experience. Discovery Expeditions is offering a special price of US$998* per person for this seven-night/eight-day package for select travel dates – February 6 and February 17, 2007.

The package starts on select travel dates with your arrival at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize. Please see the itinerary below. All services are included as indicated by the itinerary. Meals included as indicated (B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner).

*Starting price is based on double occupancy in tourist class accommodation. Accommodation upgrades available on request. Package price will vary based on accommodation upgrades requested.

DAY 1
Arrival; meet and greet service and transfer to Belize City area hotel. Accommodation.

DAY 2
Your adventure begins as you head for the wildlife habitat known as the Belize Zoo for an introduction to the country’s diverse fauna. The zoo was created as a sanctuary for the country’s indigenous species and is now home to an impressive array of large cats, primates, reptiles and birds. Jaguars, tapirs, toucan and jabirus are but a few of the exotic species for photo opportunities. A visit to the zoo gives you the opportunity to see Belize’s amazing wildlife in one location. The adventure continues with a scenic drive up the Western Highway to the Cayo (pronounced Ky-O) District. After lunch we head to Xunantunich (Maya for Maiden of the Rock), which sits just inside the western border of Belize. Before reaching the entrance of this ancient city, your party will board a 19th century hand-cranked ferry to take you across the Mopan River. The Maya ruins of Xunantunich are actually located on one of the highest plateaus in the area and it is possible to climb to the top of El Castillo, the largest of the temples at this site. From this vantage point one gains a panoramic view of the Cayo District and nearby Guatemala, and breathtaking scenery of untouched jungles. After the tour we take a short drive to your hotel for dinner and accommodations at a Cayo area hotel. (L/D)

DAY 3
Depart from your hotel and head southwest to the Chiquibul Forest Reserve for a visit to the famous Maya site of Caracol (Maya for snail), the largest Mayan city in Belize. This site in size rivals that of neighbouring Tikal. Canaa, the largest and most impressive temple at this site is still the highest structure in the country. From here one has a panoramic view of a vast empire that once was. The lush primary rainforest vista gives one the sense of peaceful silence interrupted only by a startled bird call or howl of a monkey. Picnic lunch while at Caracol. In the afternoon you will continue your exploration in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, with stops made at Rio Frio Caves and time for a quick swim at the Rio On bathing pools. Return to your Cayo area lodge. (B/L/D)

DAY 4
Morning departure for short drive to the Rainforest Medicine Trails. As you walk along well-defined trails, your guide will point out plants and herbs once used by the Maya and still used by Belizeans today for medicinal purposes. Samples from many of these plants and trees have been sent worldwide in the search of cures for diseases such as cancer. After exploring nature’s pharmacy, board your canoe for a trip down the Macal branch of the Belize River. Along the limestone cliffs of the river you look for parrots, toucans and iguanas as they hang precariously from trees along the river. After lunch you start your return to Belize City with a stop at Cahal Pech Maya Ruins, which boasts the restoration of many masks, stairways and arch structures only found at this site. Upon arrival in Belize City check in at Municipal (domestic) Airport for a 15-minute air transfer to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye for four nights of island ambience. (B/L)

DAY 5
Morning snorkel tour to Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley. You will snorkel in incredibly clear waters and have a personal encounter with nurse sharks and graceful stingrays. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight Ambergris Caye.

DAYS 6-7
Activities on your own while at San Pedro. Hotel accommodations included.

DAY 8
Activities on your own in the morning followed by transfer to the international airport.
