Dominica offers great nighttime experiences

Experience Dominica after hours in a nature spa, at a bonfire, on an evening hike or river canyoning

Roseau, Dominica (July 12, 2007) – The Caribbean island of Dominica is much more than pretty waterfalls and daytime hikes. Some would say the real fun starts as soon as the lights go out. From evening spa treatments to bonfire barbecues to night hikes, visitors to this nature island will stay entertained all night long until the break of dawn.

THE JTAS EXPERIENCE – JUNGLE TREKKING ADVENTURES & SAFARIS
Evening visit to a nature spa: In the light of day, the haze of dusk or in the glow of a flambo, rediscover yourself and regain your sense of wellness. Be rejuvenated and pampered by Dominica’s unspoiled natural beauty – all in the solace of streams, hot-water pools and bubbling sulphur mud baths. This encounter also provides for tranquil waterfall bathing, a tropical garden tour and an encounter with a mystical healer (beverages provided). Difficulty level: easy, fun

Bonfire barbecue: Enjoy a local dinner hot off the grill served with your choice of beverages (rum punch and fruit juice), as well as traditional Dominican entertainment (ring games, traditional folk singalongs, African drums and dances and folkloric story telling) all around a bonfire with good music. Perfect for the entire family! Participants on this tour should wear proper walking shoes and light clothing. Difficulty level: easy, fun

Night hike: Enjoy an evening walk through the rainforest and experience the nocturnal sounds and secrets of the night by the light of the moon and flambos! This 2.5-hour experience begins mid-afternoon with a visit to a local waterfall and opportunities for swimming in cool, clear water and ends with a snack and beverage served under the light of flambos. Participants on this tour should wear proper walking shoes and light clothing. Difficulty level: moderate

RAINFOREST SHANGRI-LA RESORT
Nighttime river canyoning: River Blanc flows and cascades through one of the most beautiful canyons in the world and has geothermal areas with steam geysers and hot springs along its banks. Beautiful during the day and magical at night (head lamps required), this trip requires some river fording and some bouldering. After your adventure, relax in the riverside stone tubs, which are fed by naturally hot mineral water, cover yourself with sulfur mud and unwind in the natural steam sauna or take a natural massage in one of the cascades. This experience is unbelievable and unforgettable when the moon is full. On-site accommodations are available.

Known as “The Nature Island” and located between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Eastern Caribbean, the independent nation of Dominica (pronounced “Dom-in-eek-a”) is the largest and most mountainous of the Windward Islands, encompassing an area of nearly 290 square miles. Of volcanic origins with mountains reaching heights of nearly 5000 feet, rain forests that are considered among the last true oceanic rain forests in the world, and more than 365 rivers, waterfalls, boiling lakes and pristine coral reefs, Dominica’s natural diversity is truly unique. Dominica is also home to the last remaining settlement of the indigenous people of the Caribbean – the Carib Indians. A place where man and nature live in harmony, adventurers and nature lovers alike will revel in the island’s ecotourism options which include scuba diving, snorkelling, mountain biking, kayaking, horseback riding, nature tours, hiking/trekking, sailing, fishing and whale-, dolphin- and birdwatching.

Dominica continues to be recognized for its attributes and sustainable tourism efforts, including being the first country in the world to receive Benchmarking designation from the prestigious ecotourism organization Green Globe 21, and ranking as the only Caribbean destination in the top five happiest countries on earth in the Happy Planet Index (compiled by Britain’s New Economics Foundation).
