Cayman Islands to host underprivileged kids from New York

Partnership with The Fresh Air Fund and Cayman Airways benefits 11 teens and their chaperones

New York, New York, USA (August 3, 2007) – A group of inner-city youths will visit the Cayman Islands this summer, stay with host families and experience some of the most unique and exciting activities the Caribbean has to offer through a partnership with the Cayman Islands, Cayman Airways and The Fresh Air Fund. Vacationing from August 6 to 12, the group, consisting of 11 New York City teens and their chaperones, will fly direct to Grand Cayman from New York’s John F Kennedy Airport on Cayman Airway’s recently launched (June 24, 2007) new route.

The Fresh Air Fund is an independent, not-for-profit agency that has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. This summer in the Cayman Islands, the 14-16 year olds will spend the week visiting famous and interactive attractions, including Stingray City, Boatswain’s Beach (home of the Cayman Turtle Farm) and Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, where an encounter with the rare and endangered blue iguana (found only in Grand Cayman) highlights every visit. The teens will kayak through the mangroves, snorkel in Cayman’s pristine waters and take a day-trip to Cayman Brac.

“New York has always held a special place in the heart of the Cayman Islands people so I’m delighted that we are able to welcome the Fresh Air Fund, and by extension these wonderful young people, to our island home,” said the Honorable Minister of Tourism, Charles E Clifford. “I know that the group is going to have an incredible and life-enriching experience while here. The itinerary we have organized for them will showcase the very best of the Cayman Islands and we are encouraging everyone in Cayman to welcome them in every way possible.”

“The Cayman Islands is proud and honoured to work with The Fresh Air Fund to provide these teens the chance to experience everything our destination has to offer – from sun and sand to clean air and a true sense of community,” said Pilar Bush, Director of Tourism. “These children will be forever changed by this experience.”

The participating Fresh Air Fund adolescents were selected by the organization based on their achievements, their willingness to succeed and their history with the organization. The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism has been working closely with The Fresh Air Fund to prepare all who are involved for the trip ahead.

Located 480 miles south of Miami in the vibrant tranquility of the western Caribbean, this trio of tiny islands is a premier destination for discriminating travellers, honeymooners and families. World renowned for its idyllic beaches and diving spots, and recognized as a sophisticated, diverse financial centre, the Cayman Islands offer spectacular recreational opportunities along with warm, impeccable service.
