Puerto Rico events and hotel deals tempt travellers this fall

Cultural and sporting events combine with hotel deals throughout the island

San Juan, Puerto Rico (August 15, 2007) – As the mercury begins to drop and early sunsets and cool breezes replace sunny summer days, you can postpone the cold-weather blues with an escape to Puerto Rico, where the sun always shines, the beaches are pristine, exciting festivals and events are taking place this fall, and a bevy of activities from salsa dancing until dawn to kayaking through the bioluminescent bays of Vieques await you.

This fall, numerous events being celebrated on the island will make your stay in Puerto Rico a truly authentic experience. Witness the island’s vibrant culture and Latin flavours, rhythm and sounds through the following events:

Puerto Rico Art & Wine Fair (October 5-7): Bringing together San Juan’s most prestigious art galleries, this fair combines works of art from more than 150 well-known artists with an international wine tasting event.

Annual Plátano Festival (October 13-16): Celebrated every year in Corozal, in the north-central region of Puerto Rico, this festival celebrates the plátano (plantain) season, and visitors can taste the limitless dishes that can be made from plátanos.

Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League (November 1–December 31): Kicking off winter baseball in Puerto Rico, this league provides visitors the opportunity to catch one of the many games and see some of the island’s best baseball stars, including Bernie Williams and Edgar Martinez.

San Juan Cinema Fest (November 16-22): Exhibiting 28 films from 17 different countries in movie theatres throughout the island, movie connoisseurs won't want to miss this international film festival.

Typical Dishes Festival (November 24-26): This three-day event celebrated in Luquillo, on the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico, brings out the good-natured competitive spirit in all cooks, especially where traditional cuisine and tastes have a faithful following.

To help plan your escape this fall, a select number of hotels across the island are offering tempting packages for visitors during this time.

Highlights in Porta del Sol include the Copamarina Beach Resort Romance Package, which includes two nights, breakfast, a bottle of champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries or fruit platter, a dinner for two and massages starting at $585.

In the San Juan metro area, the Isla Verde Beach Resort is offering a getaway that includes accommodations for two in a deluxe ocean-view room, breakfast buffet, welcome rum cocktails and a $25 casino coupon starting at $205.

In Old San Juan, Hotel El Convento is offering a Sun, Fun and History package for families, which includes an upgrade to superior accommodations, afternoon wines and hors d’oeuvres, breakfast and lunch for two children per day, one kite per child for flying at El Morro, a signature hotel bag, admission to the El Convento Beach Club, two complimentary child admissions to the Children’s Museum and use of the fitness centre starting at $175 per night per room.
