St. John, USVI, named as the Best Island in the Caribbean

Island receives Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Award

St. John, US Virgin Islands (October 18, 2005) – For the first time ever, St. John in the US Virgin Islands was voted Best Island in the Caribbean/Atlantic by readers of Condé Nast Traveler in the publication’s 18th annual Readers’ Choice Awards poll. The prestigious award was presented to the Department of Tourism at a gala ceremony held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on October 17.

St. John topped the list with a higher score than Bermuda or the British Virgin Islands. Each island candidate was rated, criterion by criterion, as excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor. Categories included scenery, friendliness, lodging, restaurants, and activities. The ratings for the 18th annual poll are based on the responses of nearly 250,000 discriminating subscribers of Condé Nast Traveler. Complete results of the poll will be published in the November 2005 issue.

“We are absolutely thrilled. St. John and all of the US Virgin Islands have always shared a common goal of welcoming travelers as guests to our home,” says Pamela C. Richards, Commissioner of Tourism. “We are honored to be chosen as the best Caribbean island by some of the most discerning and knowledgeable travelers in the world.”
