Aruba Music Festival headliners include STYX and Lionel Richie

Fifth annual musical extravaganza set for October 6-7, 2006

(June 14, 2006) – Aruba is gearing up to host an extraordinary lineup for this year’s Fifth Annual Aruba Music Festival set for October 6-7, 2006. For two days, sun seekers will not only get the opportunity to bask in the near-perfect weather, enjoy an endless roster of fun to-dos, and meet some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean, but also rock out to rock legends STYX (October 6) and groove to the unforgettable sounds of Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie (October 7). Columbus Day weekend in Aruba is the ideal tropical backdrop for these two incredible performances at the Aruba Entertainment Center, which will once again turn the island into a music lover’s paradise.

For more than 30 years STYX has been synonymous with heart-pumping rock and roll and searing power ballads. Their compelling live shows have helped the band build a legion of devoted fans around the world. The band’s resumé includes nearly 30 Top 40 singles, which also puts STYX among an elite group of acts who have had Top 10 hits in three different decades. Enduring classics, including “Lady,” “Babe,” ‘Blue Collar Man,” “Fooling Yourself,” “Show Me The Way” and many, many more helped STYX become the first band to have four consecutive albums go double platinum. Their latest effort, Big Bang Theory, which was released in 2005, once again put them back on the Billboard charts. The album features reinterpretations of some classic rock songs, including the Beatles “I Am The Walrus,” which reached #2 on classic rock radio. The band continues to keep a torrid pace performing more than 100 shows a year while also writing and recording new material.

Lionel Richie began his illustrious career with the Commodores, growing an extremely loyal fan base through his unbelievable voice and wonderful songwriting. Mega hits, including “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady” and “Still,” cemented their stature as one of the most popular groups of the 70s. This success led Lionel Richie to begin accepting songwriting commissions from other artists. Richie wrote “Lady” for country superstar Kenny Rogers and the romantic ballad “Endless Love” for Diana Ross, which became the most successful single in Motown history, spending an astonishing nine weeks at number one. Its success encouraged Lionel Richie to branch out into a full-fledged solo career in 1982. His debut album produced the chart-topping single “Truly,” which was followed by an incredible string of 13 consecutive Top 10 hits such as “All Night Long,” “Hello” and “Say You, Say Me.” In May of 2006, Lionel Richie headlined the world famous New Orleans JazzFest to critical acclaim. His long awaited new album Coming Home is scheduled for release in the fall of 2006.

“With the amazing lineup of performers and legends at this year’s Fifth Annual Aruba Music Festival, we are looking forward to an unforgettable weekend,” said Minister of Tourism and Transportation, Edison Briesen. “For five years the Aruba Music Festival has been an extremely successful event and each year the stellar production wows the crowd of visitors and locals. With STYX and Lionel Richie headlining this year’s celebration, we’re sure it will be two truly memorable nights.”
