Mexican Caribbean island sinks two former navy patrol ships
Cozumel, Mexico (July 25, 2006) – Cozumel recently enacted plans to create new underwater diving sites outside the Cozumel National Marine Park by sinking two former navy patrol ships. The 85-foot-long Laguna Mandinga and the 42-foot-long Patzcuaro were submerged 370 yards offshore in about 38 feet of water and will also enhance marine life by serving as artificial reefs.
Boasting the world’s second largest reef, spectacular formations and clear waters, Cozumel is already one of the most popular diving destinations. The Caribbean island, located along Mexico’s Riviera Maya, welcomed approximately 200,000 scuba divers last year, according to the Cozumel Tourism Promotion Board. To accommodate dive enthusiasts, most of the island’s best hotels are located on beaches near the three largest reef systems that extend close to shore: Santa Rosa, Colombia and Palancar.
