New cultural districts throughout the island to focus on rich cultural tourism offerings for visitors
San Juan, Puerto Rico (November 13, 2006) – The San Juan Cultural District is in the process of receiving final designation with the signing of an executive order by Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá. The new district is the first in a series to be created throughout Puerto Rico to improve accessibility to the island’s many cultural attractions and organizations.
The San Juan Cultural District includes a number of cultural activities, art exhibits, dance shows and music festivals between Old San Juan and Rio Piedras, including the neighborhoods of Condado, Miramar, Santurce and Hato Rey. Various programs designed for the enjoyment of visitors, as well as the local community, will be held in parks, plazas, theaters, museums and other facilities in the area. Spanish rock, Latin jazz, classical music, salsa festivals, international film festivals and various art exhibits will be included among the first events.
“Puerto Rico’s arts, culture and history are driving tourism to our island from visitors interested in more than just a beach vacation,” said Terestella González-Denton, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. “We’re pleased to offer new options in the form of the San Juan Cultural District, which will showcase the music, art, dance and passion of our people.”
Festivities to celebrate the official start of this new program will take place throughout San Juan all day on November 19, 2006. Activities include the launch of the recently expanded LeLoLai program in Condado’s Ventana al Mar Plaza; a popular series of concerts, such as a Spanish rock concert at the Urban Train Station in Hato Rey; and the 38th CIP National Contest for Folk Singers and Arts & Crafts Grand Finale in San Juan’s Fifth Centenary Plaza.
