Superior courses planned for Cable Beach, South Ocean and the west end of New Providence Island

Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman are helping to ramp up the reputation of The Bahamas as a golfing destination.
Greg Norman aka The Shark, who designed the acclaimed golf course at the Four Seasons Resort at Emerald Bay, Great Exuma, has now turned his attention to the beautiful South Ocean Beach course near the southwestern tip of New Providence.
The original course was designed by famed architect Joe Lee and includes ruins from the days of slavery, blue holes and ocean views. Norman plans to improve this already great layout.
“Projects like this help in the growth of golf as well as the destination, and create a huge opportunity for The Bahamas,” Norman said at a news conference announcing the remake of South Ocean.
NICKLAUS AT CABLE BEACH
Meanwhile, Jack Nicklaus aka The Golden Bear, has been chosen to work with the Baha Mar Group, which is investing $1.6 billion to remake the entire Cable Beach strip, including the Cable Beach Golf Club, the first one built in The Bahamas (circa 1930s).
Speaking about the deal, Nicklaus said he was “honoured and excited” to have been chosen to create the golf attractions for this development. The owner’s commitment to bringing the highest-quality resort to Nassau is impressive, and I know that commitment extends to the golf course as well,” Nicklaus said.
ERNIE AND TIGER COOPERATE
Further west, Joe Lewis – a billionaire resort developer and part-time Bahamian resident – has announced plans to create an exclusive seaside residential development and resort called Albany House that will include yet another first-rate golfing facility.
Lewis, who is said to play to a handicap of 12 or 13, is bringing in PGA superstars Tiger Woods and Ernie Els to cooperate in developing Albany House’s golf course. According to his website (www.ernieels.com) Els has been tagged with designing the course at the 500-acre-plus resort.
“It’s early days yet, but it’s going to be an incredible place to come and stay and play golf. It’ll be the best of the best, in every sense,” says the lanky South African.
