Bonaire Dive Into Summer 2007 schedule of activities announced

A first look at the lineup of activities confirmed for the June 1–September 30 event


Kralendijk, Bonaire (April 3, 2007) – If this first look at Bonaire Dive Into Summer 2007 is any indication of things to come, visitors to the island this summer are in for a real treat. Taking place June 1 through September 30, this island-wide event focuses on scuba diving through a series of specialty topics, including family, photography and marine conservation. Here’s the first look at the lineup of activities:

June 1–September 30: FREE coupon book – Valid all summer long and filled with valuable discounts for hotels, restaurants, shopping, activities, rentals and more, the free coupon book will be available to everyone on island at hotels and Tourism Corporation Bonaire. One per person.

June 1–September 30: Summer-long photo contest – Sponsored by Scuba Diving magazine, Bonaire visitors may compete for prizes with each other by uploading their best Bonaire photos at www.BonaireDiveIntoSummer.com. Winners in three categories (wide angle, macro and topside) to be announced in October.

June 1–September 30: Explore the Hilma Hooker – Explore this famous wreck and learn about its history with Port Bonaire and Dive Friends Bonaire. By appointment only. E-mail info@portbonaire.com.

June 8: Taste of Bonaire – Experience food, culture, local handicrafts and all things Bonairean at this festival located in the centre of town in Wilhelmina Park.

June 16-23: Digital shootout – Learn from the pros, improve your shooting techniques, take Photoshop seminars, video editing seminars and get image critiques. Divi Flamingo Beach Resort and Casino.

July 1: Annual Bonaire Arts Day – Put on by the Bonaire Art Foundation (Fundashon pa Arte i Kultura di Bonaire) since 1993, this event, also known as the Dia di Arte, gives artists the opportunity to showcase their handmade arts and crafts, as well as local music and dance. Initiated to promote local artists to the Bonaire community, the event takes place 10am-10pm at Wilhelmina Park. For more information visit www.bonaireart.org.

July 14: Underwater Clean-up Dive – To participate in this quarterly event that keeps Bonaire’s reef clean and healthy meet at Yellow Submarine at 1pm.

August 1-5: The Annual Pro Kids World Freestyle Windsurfing Competition – Be a spectator or a participant at this competition on Lac Bay where children from around the world compete to win the title of Pro Kid. More information is available at www.prokidsfreestyle.com.

August 3: Taste of Bonaire – Experience food, culture, local handicrafts and all things Bonairean at this festival located in the centre of town at Wilhelmina Park.

September 6: Bonaire Day (Dia Di Bonaire) – Bonaire Day, which commemorates Amerigo Vespucci’s arrival in Bonaire in 1499, includes activities held at Wilhelmina Park in Bonaire’s capital city, Kralendijk, and around the island. Celebrating the Bonairean people and their history, on this legal holiday visitors and local residents gather in the park to enjoy folkloric dancing, music, art and local food. Throughout the day local dignitaries from the government and the community address participants with stories of the Bonairean people and history.

September 6: Bonaire Day Fun Run – In celebration of Bonaire Day there will be 2, 4 and 5km runs open to everyone on the island to participate. 8am

September 7: Taste of Bonaire – Experience food, culture, local handicrafts and all things Bonairean at this festival located in the centre of town at Wilhelmina Park.

September 15-22: Love Our Planet Week – In observation of World Clean-Up Day, there will be above and below water clean-ups. Environmentalists from the Coral Reef Alliance (C.O.R.A.L.) will be on island to lead underwater activities throughout the week.

September 15: Underwater Clean-up Dive – In conjunction with World Clean-up Day, Yellow Submarine is hosting an underwater clean-up and a BBQ lunch for all participants. To participate in helping Bonaire do its part in this world-wide event that keeps our planet clean and healthy, meet at Yellow Submarine at 1pm.
