Cayman Islands (May 4, 2007) – Ocean Frontiers Ltd, of Grand Cayman, is leading the way with new conservation efforts in the scuba diving industry. Beginning April 1, 2007 Ocean Frontiers started offering carbon offsets to divers, enabling them to offset their carbon emissions produced from dive boats, filling of dive tanks and the production of desalinated water. During 2006, Ocean Frontiers monitored and benchmarked all their fuel, electricity and water consumption to derive a formula to calculate the carbon emissions per dive per diver.
Offset programs are run by not-for-profit organizations and provide us with ways to offset our carbon emissions in schemes such as reforestation and in carbon-neutral technologies. The costs involved are surprisingly small. To offset a week’s worth of scuba diving would be approximately US$3 per diver. To offset the typical flight from North America to Grand Cayman would be approximately US$15 each.
Even if you’re not diving with Ocean Frontiers, you can still use their carbon offset service to neutralize your dive trip.
