Jamaica resort wins 2007 American Express Caribbean Environmental Award

Sandals Grande Ocho Rios Beach & Villa Resort honoured for its impressive environmental management system

(July 30, 2007) – Sandals Grande Ocho Rios Beach & Villa Resort took home the 2007 American Express Caribbean Environmental Award at the Caribbean Hotel Association’s Caribbean Hotel & Industry Conference in Miami, Florida, June 17-19, 2007. The resort obtained the highest combined scores, based on the following five criteria: environmental management and stewardship, conservation of natural resources, awareness and community activities, infrastructure and technology, and health and safety.

The resort is Green Globe certified and benchmarked, and received a commendation for "Outstanding and Dedicated Service to the 2004 International Coastal Clean Up and Profound Commitment to Marine Environment" bestowed by the Ocean Conservancy.

Sandals Grande Ocho Rios Beach & Villa Resort has been implementing its environmental management system since 2001 with goals to minimize impacts on the surrounding environment. It has implemented a program which impressively monitors water and energy use, solid, hazardous and air emission waste generation, water and noise pollution, and ecosystem vitality. The property achieved a four per cent savings on water use over the prior year, and reuse and recycling programs are in place in the kitchens, maintenance and other property areas.

Additionally, the resort recognizes staff annually for their achievements, awareness and initiative. Guests participate in the resort’s environmental activities, such as marine park coral reef restoration projects and tree planting exercises. And they regularly organize, for both guests and staff, cleanup activities, community projects, environmental education and theme days.
