Stargazing in the Caribbean

Ladera Resort in St. Lucia offers spectacular setting for Astronomy Week

Soufrière, St. Lucia, West Indies (February 14, 2005) - Perched 1,100 feet above sea level with outstanding views of the night sky, Ladera Resort is an ideal location for stargazing. For the third season the resort will introduce guests to the wonders of the Caribbean night sky during Astronomy Week from March 13 to 20, 2005.

Ladera’s Astronomy Week features Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at Fels Planetarium, director at the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia, and host of Sky Talk, a weekly radio program on National Public Radio. Every evening Mr. Pitts will provide guests with guided viewings of the constellations, explore the phases of the moon and planetary system, and offer tips for astrophotography. Professional quality telescopes are available for use on public terraces.

Located and set into the lush St. Lucian rainforest, Ladera Resort is modeled on luxurious tree-house living. The completely private rooms have only three walls, allowing spectacular, unobstructed views of the night sky. Guests can even stargaze without getting out of bed.

Rates for the special week, however, won’t be astronomical. Ladera’s seasonal room rates apply and start at just $420 and include a one-bedroom suite or villa accommodation, complimentary daily breakfast, sessions in astrophotography led by expert astronomer Derrick Pitts, complimentary Milky Way or Ginger Tea cocktail at the resort, and a complimentary night sky planisphere chart.

For Astronomy Week 2005, March 13 to 20, rates are as follows: $420 for a one-bedroom suite with plunge pool, $530 for a deluxe one-bedroom suite with plunge pool, $560 for a two-bedroom suite with plunge pool, $600 for a villa with indoor plunge pool, and $890 for a luxury villa with pool. Add $35 for each additional person in a villa. Rates are per room per night based on double occupancy and do not include taxes and a 10 per cent service charge.

For reservations call Ladera Resort toll free at 1-800-917-0766.
