JANUARY
1 – New Year’s Day. Public holiday observed Jan 2.

1 – Polar Bear Swim, venue TBA. Swim in the ocean with giant ice cubes. Beach party with food, drinks and free T-shirt. Organized by the Canadian Men’s Club. Tel 324-0377, Gunther Merk.

1 – Staniel Cay Cruising Regatta and New Years celebration, Exuma. Traditional festivities including a sailing regatta, charity auction and floating drive (golf). Tel 242/336-2430, Exuma Tourist Office.

4-5 – Farmer’s Cay Festival, Exuma. Two days of music, food and fun. Tel 242/355-4006 or 355-4017, Terry Bain.

13 – Cacique Awards, Rainforest Theatre, Wyndham Nassau Resort. Gala event honours Bahamians for contributions to The Bahamas tourism industry. Categories include creative arts, sports and leisure, nature tourism, human resource development and transportation. Visit www.caciqueawards.com.

14 – Opening of the Supreme Court, Christ Church Cathedral, King and George sts, Nassau, 10am. Church service attended by members of the judiciary dressed in traditional wigs and gowns. Following the service, members proceed from the church to the Supreme Court at Rawson Sq. The Royal Bahamas Police Force Band performs.

25-29 – Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament, Ocean Club Golf Course, Paradise Island. Thirty-six celebrities from the world of sports and entertainment team up for an exciting four-day tournament schedule. $200,000 purse to benefit celebrities’ charity of choice. Tel 363-2000.

27 – Red Cross Ball, venue TBA. Cocktails 7:30pm, dinner served at 8:30pm. Tickets $200. Tel 323-7370 (to 3), Marina Glinton.

28-Feb 4 – Stepping Stone Quilters Annual Quilt Show, Trinity Methodist Church, Frederick St, 10am-4pm.

FEBRUARY
TBA – National Arts Festival. Tel 356-2691/2.

1 – Ebony Fashion Fair, Rainforest Theatre, Wyndham Nassau Resort. Showcase of the latest fashions by American and European designers. Event sponsored by the Pilot Club of Nassau.

11-12 – Valentine’s Day Sailing Regatta, Montagu Bay. Exciting weekend of championship sailing.

MARCH

16-18 – Bahamian Music and Heritage Festival, Exuma. Bahamian sloop exhibition, storytelling, singing, poetry reading, native arts and crafts and more. Tel 242/336-2430, Exuma Tourist Office.

18-19 – International Dog Show and Obedience Trials, Botanical Gardens, 9am-2pm. Event showcases local (potcake) and purebred dogs of all classes. Tel 393-1360, June Hall.

APRIL

MAY
TBA – Bahamas Film Festival, Galleria Cinemas, JFK Dr, Nassau. Ten-day festival to showcase films, documentaries, music videos, commercials and public service announcements by Bahamian filmmakers. Awards to be presented to winners of each category.

6 – Farmer’s Cay Conch Festival, Exuma. Celebrate the conch with local Exumians. Tel 242/355-4006 or 355-4017, Terry Bain.

JUNE
TBA – All Andros Crabfest, Fresh Creek, Andros. Highlights include the crab cultural show, crab culinary contest and crabs of Andros life cycle display. Rake ’n scrape music. Tel 242/368-2286, Andros Tourism Office.

1-5 – Eleuthera Pineapple Festival, Gregory Town, Eleuthera. Celebrate the pineapple with a Junkanoo parade, music, food and fun. Tel 242/332-2142.

2 – Labour Day. Public holiday.

3-24 – Junkanoo in June Heritage Festival, 1-10pm every Sat in June, Arawak Cay. The excitement of Junkanoo with Bahamian food, craft demonstrations, storytelling, children’s activities and grand Junkanoo parade – a spectacle of costume, music and dance.

5 – Whit Monday. Public holiday.
