Nightlife in Nassau

A roundup of the entertainment available at bars in Nassau, Cable Beach and Paradise Island in The Bahamas

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE – NASSAU, CABLE BEACH, PARADISE ISLAND - JAN 2006 EDITION

The setting sun is no excuse to call it a day in The Bahamas. Our warm winter evenings are filled with promise, whether you’re looking for a quiet restaurant for a candlelit dinner for two, taking a pub crawl through lively bars or dancing till dawn in one of our popular nightclubs.

For a truly authentic Bahamian experience, start the night with some Junkanoo at Café Johnny Canoe, at the Nassau Beach Hotel on Cable Beach. Named for a yuletide musical street parade, Junkanoo features colourful costumes and a driving beat that makes you want to get up and dance. It’s held every Friday at 8pm. Also on Friday and Saturday nights, enjoy live Bahamian and Caribbean music courtesy of Herbie and Da Crew, from 7:30pm to 12 midnight.

Something softer? Charming Indigo Café, located further west on the Cable Beach strip, features eclectic dining, a flamenco guitar player on Tuesday nights from 8 to 10pm and TooLoose, a live performance by singer/songwriter Steven Holden with special guests on Thursday nights from 8 to 10pm.

Impress your date
Chez Willie, on West Bay St, offers softly lit surroundings, fine dining and live music. Enjoy contemporary favourites by Rusty Armbrister Friday through Sunday, starting at 7:30pm.

At East Villa on East Bay St, enjoy an evening of delicious Chinese food (or one of the best steaks on the island) along with piano stylings by Philip McPhee from 7 to 11pm, Monday through Saturday.

Other places offering contemporary and classical piano dinner music include the Black Angus Grille at the Wyndham Nassau Resort, Graycliff on West Hill St and Montagu Gardens on East Bay.

Bridge to Paradise
What can one say about Atlantis? It has everything romantic: dinners, music, dancing, even an evening of standup comedy, if that is your preference, at Joker’s Wild Comedy Club in the Coral Towers. Local and visiting comics from the US and Canada will give your abs a good workout Tuesday to Sunday, starting at 9:30pm.

Music and dancing in a relaxed setting? You can’t do better than Plato’s indoor/outdoor coffee and cocktail lounge with the Tony Seymour Duo, Thursday through Saturday from 9pm until 1am.

From Atlantis, take a stroll on well-lighted paths to Marina Village. Café Martinique, overlooking the magnificent yachts in the marina, features French haute cuisine with sophisticated live piano music in an elegant setting.

Not far from Marina Village, Oasis Lounge at Club Land’Or features a lively one-man band that specializes in popular Bahamian themes Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday starting at 7pm.

Further east on Paradise Island, enjoy live jazz, R&B and Bahamian favourites while overlooking the harbour at Columbus Tavern, located in the Paradise Harbour Club & Marina. Enjoy live music Friday and Saturday from 7 to 10pm.

For something very different, take a night sail through Nassau Harbour aboard the Flying Cloud, a 57-foot catamaran. Enjoy complimentary wine or a cocktail, along with hot and cold hors d’oeuvres. A cash bar is available. Cruises leave the Paradise Island Ferry Terminal Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6pm. Dinner cruises, with a three-course Bahamian meal, are available by charter.

Lounge act
The Stage Lounge at the Wyndham Nassau resort provides a perfect retreat for casino-weary guests. Unwind with a cocktail and enjoy DJ music Friday and Saturday starting at 9pm. Be sure to check out the variety show downstairs at the Rainforest Theatre in the Crystal Palace Casino. Also at Rainforest Theatre, by limited engagement, is Celebrities on Stage featuring celebrity impersonators The Edwards Twins. Watch Elton John, Bette Midler, Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand and a host of other “stars” perform Tuesday through Saturday at 8:30pm. Tel 327-6200 for availability.

Midnight till dawn
One good thing about spending a night out in Nassau is the multitude of nightclubs, pubs and bars open well past the midnight hour.

On Cable Beach, guests at SuperClubs Breezes can try out their moves at Hurricanes Disco. Or, travel towards downtown on West Bay St to Cocktails & Dreams for some more action. Located near Cocktails & Dreams is a popular local hangout, The Beach Hut, which offers Friday night karaoke.

Enjoy a late night pint and catch up on the latest football and rugby scores at the Cricket Club, located on West Bay St next to Fort Charlotte.

Downtown, Hard Rock Café is a great place for DJ dancing amid genuine rock ’n roll memorabilia. There’s a happy hour (5 to 7pm) and the bar is open till midnight Monday to Thursday and to 2am Friday and Saturday. For a good old-fashioned pub crawl, you can’t beat downtown Nassau. Here you will find a wide variety of night-time culture, whether it be a Cuban mojito at Flamingo and Café Habana or an energetic evening at nightclub Fluid Lounge. Also downtown is a lively downstairs pub called The Drop Off, serving food until 6am.

On East Bay St, test your pool skills at First Down Sports Bar or go for a libation or two at Hammerheads Bar & Grill. Club Waterloo offers a variety of live and DJ music for dance revellers until the early morning hours.

Keep the evening alive at Dragons nightclub at Atlantis on Paradise Island, or enjoy a beverage while overlooking Nassau Harbour at The Green Parrot at Hurricane Hole Marina.

If making a big win is on your mind, test your luck at the Casino at Atlantis or Crystal Palace Casino on Cable Beach.
