  CUSTOMS
Visitors are allowed to bring in 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco or 50 cigars, and one litre of spirits or wine duty free.

IMPORTING ANIMALS
To import a pet you must apply for an import permit. For more information call the Veterinary Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries at 758/450-2812.

GETTING THERE
BY AIR
Most flights arrive at Hewanorra International Airport (airport code UVF; tel 454-6355) in Vieux Fort, which is about 40 miles south of the capital, Castries. Commuter airlines originating out of the Eastern Caribbean generally land at the smaller George F L Charles Airport (airport code SLU; tel 452-1156) on the outskirts of Castries. Flights take about 3.5 hours from Miami, five hours from Toronto and eight hours from London.

BY CRUISE
Cruise ships dock at Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage in Castries.

Cruise lines that call on St Lucia include Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, Lindblad Expeditions, Majestic Cruises, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Seabourn, Silversea Cruises, Star Clippers and Windjammer Barefoot Cruises.

The St Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority maintains a cruise ship schedule on their website (www.slaspa.com).

BY FERRY
The L'Express des Isles ferry operates between St Lucia (tel 758/456-5022) and Dominica (tel 767/448-2181), Guadeloupe (tel 590/5 90 91 69 68) and Martinique (tel 596/5 96 63 05 45). The return fare for adults is about $99. Reduced fares are available for seniors, students, kids and babies.

Channel Shuttles Inc (tel 758/451-8161) operates a daily ferry service between St Lucia and Martinique. The return fare is about $77.

BY YACHT
Moorings are available at Rodney Bay Marina, Marigot Bay and Soufriere, which are also official points of entry.

GETTING AROUND
BY CAR
There are plenty of car rental agencies on the island. Bicycles, scooters and motorcycles can also be rented. Roads are steep, narrow and winding with few guardrails, and often poorly marked.

To rent a car you will need an international driver's license or a temporary St Lucia driver's license, which you can purchase for EC$54/US$20 at the car rental agency, the airport immigration department or any police station. Ensure you bring your valid driver's license from home.

Driving is on the left. The use of seat belts is mandatory.

BY TAXI
Taxis are readily available at the airports, the cruise ports, major hotels and tourist areas. They can also be hired for island tours. Only use taxis that are specially marked as licensed taxis. Minibuses can also be hired as taxis for groups of up to 10 people. Water taxis are available in Soufriere.

There are no taxi meters. Rates are fixed by the government and a rate list is available at both airports. Verify the fare and the currency (EC$ or US$) with the driver prior to departure. Taxis accommodate up to four people. The approximate fare between Hewanorra Airport and Castries is EC$120-EC$175. From Castries to Rodney Bay the fare is about EC$40.

BY BUS
Privately owned minibuses operate along set routes around Castries and Gros Islet. There are no schedules, but they run until about 10pm (later on Friday night in Gros Islet). Fares range from EC$2 to EC$8, depending on your destination. Flag them down alongside the road or wait at designated bus stops.

BY FERRY
The Rodney Bay ferry operates across the bay to the shopping complex and to Pigeon Island National Park. A small ferry also operates across Marigot Bay.

BY AIR
St Lucia Helicopters (tel 453-6950) offers a 10-minute shuttle service between the Hewanorra and George F L Charles airports for US$120 per person one way. Their West Coast shuttle, which takes five minutes longer but takes a more scenic route, costs US$130 per person one way. From George F L Charles Airport to the Jalousie Hilton, which has its own helicopter pad, the eight-minute flight costs US$120 per person one way or US$230 round trip pre-paid. From Hewanorra Airport to the Jalousie Hilton the seven-minute flight costs US$125 per person one way or US$250 round trip pre-paid. Guests not staying at the hotel pay an additional $5 and $10 respectively. Rates are subject to change.
