USVI’s Agrifest returns to St Croix

36th Annual Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair set for February 17-19, 2007

St Croix, US Virgin Islands (February 5, 2007) – The much-anticipated 36th Annual Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair (known as Agrifest) will kick off President’s Day Weekend, February 17-19, 2007, on St Croix, celebrating the harvest and culture of the territory. Themed “Make Things Happen: Revive Agriculture in 2007,” the three-day Agrifest will showcase more than 70 vendors selling locally-made items, along with entertainment, exhibits, fashion shows, calypso shows, animals, rides and food preparation demonstrations.

“Agrifest is the US Virgin Islands’ largest agriculture and cultural fair, and year after year it offers visitors and residents an opportunity to experience our islands’ rich history, culture and traditions through food, music and fun-filled activities,” said Monique Sibilly-Hodge, Acting
Commissioner of Tourism. “This year’s fair is of particular relevance to the territory, as we strive to preserve our natural resources and, in turn, sustain our tourism industry for years to come.”

Agrifest will take place on the grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love. An extensive farmers market will offer fresh vegetables, fruits and ornamental plants. During Agrifest, farmers will compete for two coveted awards: Farmer of the Year and the Commissioner’s Cup. Nearby, a livestock pavilion will offer an impressive display of animals – sheep, cattle, peacocks, chickens, ducks, pigs, goats and rabbits – as well as a petting zoo for children.

Scheduled food demonstrations will be held in the food pavilion, where more than 50 vendors in native attire will sell local delicacies such as kallaloo, benye, souse, fish and fungi, and local drinks including ginger beer, sorrel, maubi and passion fruit. They will also serve desserts, such as Vienna cakes, tarts, pies, tamarind balls, jam preserves and jellies.

Agrifest is co-sponsored by the US Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, the Department of Agriculture and the University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service. The corporate sponsor is Innovative Communications Inc.

Agrifest hours are 9am to 6pm. Entrance fees are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and $2 for children. For more information, call (340) 778-0997 or visit www.viagrifest.org.

As a United States Territory, the US Virgin Islands does not require proof of citizenship from US citizens arriving from Puerto Rico or the US mainland. Entry requirements for non-US citizens are the same as for entering the United States from any foreign destination. Upon departure, a passport is required for all but US citizens.
