Turks & Caicos resort gives guests cell phone for use on-island

The Tuscany and Digicel launch innovative solution to visitor’s telecom needs

Providenciales, Turks & Caicos (December 4, 2006) – Digicel, the fastest-growing mobile telecommunications provider in the Caribbean, along with The Tuscany on Grace Bay, a new oceanfront condominium development, today announced an innovative and cost-saving telecommunications strategy that the companies are launching with the opening of the property. When The Tuscany officially opens later this month, it will do so with only one physical phone line. Instead of traditional land lines and the high costs associated with them – especially in the Caribbean – The Tuscany on Grace Bay opted to provide its owners and guests with Digicel cell phone service exclusively.

Upon arrival at The Tuscany on Grace Bay, guests and owners will receive a Sony Ericsson cell phone and charger in addition to their key, giving them all the benefits associated with cell phones, such as the convenience to use them anywhere, pre-programmed numbers for key contacts, a direct line to give to family and friends and, most of all, no phone bill!

This innovative strategy was the brainchild of Cynthia O’Connell, the general manager of The Tuscany on Grace Bay, and came to reality because of Digicel’s leadership in technology and customer service. Cynthia’s background as a Canadian luxury hotelier combined with her direct experiences when she first came to Turks & Caicos led her to the idea and to Digicel.

“When I first arrived in Turks & Caicos I was surprised by how difficult and expensive it was to make a phone call,” said O’Connell. “As a visitor, I wanted to spend as much time on the amazing Grace Bay Beach as possible, but because I was expecting an important call and my cell phone didn’t work here, I was tied to my room waiting for the call. Now, as a general manager of a small resort, I want to give my owners and guests the best possible experience and enable them to take advantage of all Turks & Caicos has to offer. Providing a cell phone as part of the accommodations is not only a convenient luxury, but by partnering with Digicel, it is also a major cost savings.”

Cynthia approached Digicel with the novel idea of opening the Tuscany on Grace Bay without any traditional phone lines in the rooms and instead providing a cell phone to use during their stay. She estimates she saved at least $30,000 by not having to install and maintain lines and a traditional PBX system. Digicel made the idea a reality with its leading edge technology and service offerings and quick-acting sales team.

By putting all of the phones on a closed-user group, Digicel offers The Tuscany competitive rates and unmatched services. Digicel provided attractive pricing on the handsets and worked with the resort to customize them by applying the resort’s logo on each phone as wallpaper. This way if the phone is inadvertently left in a restaurant or store, the phone can be returned to the resort. Because all the phones are on a closed-user group, all calls to other rooms and to the resort are free, as well as calls to the front desk. Another added bonus is that Cynthia and her team pre-programmed many key numbers, such as the hotel front desk, taxi drivers and emergency contacts, into the phone so guests don’t need to worry about remembering these numbers – they are just one push of a button away.

Guests and owners of The Tuscany on Grace Bay can use their Digicel cell phones as if they were their own personal phones. They get a direct number that they can give to friends and family and don’t need to rely on a switchboard. With a small resort like The Tuscany, having someone operating the switchboard at all times is cost-prohibitive and now, with this solution, unnecessary. This means that guests can use the phone as they need and never worry about phone charges appearing on the bill upon checkout.
