Golf like the pros at Grand Bahama Resort in The Bahamas

Westin & Sheraton Resorts on Grand Bahama Island offer guests techniques from the world’s number one golf school.

Grand Bahama Island, The Bahamas (April 20, 2005) - Learn to play like a PGA pro at the new Jim McLean School of Golf at The Westin and Sheraton at Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort. Located on Grand Bahama Island, Our Lucaya resort is the school’s first international location.

"The championship courses at The Westin and Sheraton at Our Lucaya are top-notch," says Jim McLean. "We are excited to offer guests here the best golf experience in The Bahamas."

Jim McLean School of Golf - rated number one by CNN - is the only Caribbean golf school that is home to one of the top three instructors in the world. Jim McLean has won several PGA awards, including the 2003 PGA Horton Smith (South Florida) Award, 1996 and 1998 PGA South Florida Section Teacher of the Year, 1994 PGA National Teacher of the Year, 1987 Metropolitan PGA Horton Smith Award, and 1986 Metropolitan PGA Teacher of the Year. He was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Hall of Fame in 2003.

Using Jim McLean’s proven Eight-Step Swing System for achieving a great swing, master instructors teach students techniques used by the most successful golfers today. Computers and cameras analyze a student’s swing, and the school provides a before-and-after DVD for students to keep as a record of their progress. Students also enjoy state-of-the-art instruction facilities, a practice putting green with bunker and chipping areas, covered teaching bays, and a teaching seminar area.

The school is located at Our Lucaya’s 6,824-yard Lucayan Course. Opened in 1962, the course features tree-lined holes and fast, well-bunkered greens. Demanding accuracy and shot-making ability, it carries a slope of 128 and a course rating of 72.1.

Golfers on Grand Bahama Island will find a completely different experience at the resort’s 6,930-yard Reef Course. Opened in October 2000, the course offers wide fairways flanked by strategically placed bunkers. Thirteen of the Reef’s 18 holes are bordered by water.

"Each course offers unique challenges that will help guests get the most out of their experience with Jim McLean’s instructors," says Amaury Piedra, resort manager at Our Lucaya.

The school is designed to help golfers at all levels and offers flexibility in its programming. Guests can choose from a variety of options, from a 60-minute private lesson to intense multi-day schools. Corporate clinics with rotating stations and custom-designed sessions are also available.

"Whether you’re a vacationer in Grand Bahama Island with plenty of time to tee off, or a meeting planner organizing an afternoon group activity, we can customize the school to whatever and whenever you want to play," says Piedra.

The 372-acre, 1,260-room The Westin and Sheraton at Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort also features four premier tennis courts, a full-service spa and fitness center, 14 restaurants and lounges, a 35,000-square-foot casino, and four oceanfront swimming pools. The Westin at Our Lucaya made Condé Nast Traveler’s prestigious 2005 Gold List, ranked by the magazine’s 20,000 subscribers as one of the Caribbean’s top hotels.
